Meet Bazar Bizar the brand that invites you on a faraway journey to the dancing islands, ancient traditions and heavenly beaches of Indonesia. The Belgian interior brand that grew out of a lifelong passion for travelling, creates highly original design pieces made of eco-friendly materials such as water hyacinth, rattan and bamboo.

By now, the owners have not only developed their own label but they have also successfully designed and created their own high-end, luxury decorative collections of featured accents and homeware. Numerous times a year, they travel to Indonesia, to meet the local team consisting of several Balinese employees.

How did it all start? What’s the idea behind Bazar Bizar?

Bazar Bizar grew out of a lifelong passion for travelling. The owners, Pascale & Eddy, are world travellers – but Indonesia felt for them like “coming home”. They fell in love with the country, the Balinese culture, the traditional craftsmanship and the people, not to mention the boho vibes.

That’s how they came up with the idea of launching a web-shop for unique furniture and original decorative items, crafted by Balinese housewives. Every item is unique and has its own story to tell.

By creating highly original design pieces made of eco-friendly materials and carefully selected design pieces that consistently embody originality, quality, innovation and craftsmanship, Bazar Bizar brings that enchanting touch of Balinese culture one for one to the four corners of the earth.

Who are the people behind the brand? Tell us something about yourselves.

The people behind Bazar Bizar are Pascale Pelsmaekers and Eddy Roothaert. While the owner Pascale takes care of the creative side of things and is also the public ‘face’ of the label, her husband Eddy handles the logistics.

What was your favourite highlight or happy moment in the last months?

At the moment, unexpected things keep happening. Of course, we are also strongly affected by the restrictions of the pandemic – this is certainly the case for everyone who trades across borders. We, too, had to experience delays in production that sometimes lasted for months. Then we also heard that the container ship got stuck in the Suez Canal… So we were all the more pleased when we received the message that it was on its way again!

In marketing and sales, you rely on strong, long-term relationships with your retailers. Why do they choose you? And why do you choose them?

Our retailers choose us not only because of the products but also for the story our brand tells. I personally think that nowadays it’s not only about the products themselves anymore. The elements storytelling and authenticity behind a brand are becoming more and more important. Through their orders, shop owners are not only choosing great products and a beautiful design, they are also helping us empower Balinese local women, as well as support the economy of Bali.

You have received 14 requests from 6 different countries from shops so far. Could you tell us a little bit more about one of these ‘Love Stories’ with a new reseller?

Of the 14 inquiries, we have already included 6 partners in our B2B network, 2 have even placed an order directly. We are more than thrilled to have found long-term partners on FAIRLING.

The shops that have ordered from us are very happy with the products and have remained a partner of ours. Building long-term partnerships is incredibly important.

Where should the journey go? What is the vision of Bazar Bizar?

At the moment we are already selling worldwide, but we would love to start a warehouse in the USA, to make it easier to offer our products there too. Besides that we are continuing our work with the local producers of Indonesia, India, Portugal and we will even add Vietnam to the list in the coming months.

Is there anything you would definitely advise other young, emerging brands to do?

Use the world as your playground, don’t hesitate to try, go for it! Try different ways of reaching your audience: online, trade fairs, cash&carry’s, …
