We like to call FAIRLING an online dating site for brands: the goal is to get a perfect and long-lasting match between brands and stores. And we can tell you this much: there is already quite an amount of great FAIRLING-Love Stories to tell. One of them is the story of Studio About.
Studio About works with us on FAIRLING since June, 2021. With their unique and sustainably produced interior decoration & artwork products they have received over 13 requests from interested retailers who wanted to sell a piece of art from Studio About in their local stores. The love story between Studio About and the unique retailers was a full success. Through FAIRLING Studio About has been able to form long-lasting partnerships that still last to this date.
Studio About was founded on the ambition of creating simple, aesthetic and functional interior objects in uncompromising quality. Studio About’s universe unfolds in the field of tension between industrial production and a sensitive artistic design philosophy. The intention is to meet the needs of a creative and experimental modern lifestyle.

How did it all start? What is the idea behind Studio About?
Mikkel and Soffy are the founders behind Studio About and we thought it would be nice to do something together. So it started 6 years ago on our 3 month trip to Asia. Mikkel is an architect and Soffy is a talented photographer and we thought that this would be a pretty good combination. Mikkel had some small scale projects in the drawer. We searched for sustainable production options for our products in Denmark. The first 2-3 years we successfully had our production in Denmark but at some point we expanded Studio About and found a fair production option in Asia. Now we work with 7 different production companies and we hope to grow our numbers even further.
WHO ARE THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE BRAND? TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOURSELF.
Mikkel is the designer behind Studio About and takes care of the production. Soffy works in marketing, sales and a lot more. We have a small marketing team that works with us and we currently have over 300 retailers that we work with worldwide.
What was your favorite highlight or happy moment in the last months?
We just started to work with a new Danish paper cut artist who designed our new paper cut products. We wanted to search for something new and elegant, different and a little skewed to put into our frames and therefore we approached the talented paper artist LittleDetroit and asked if she would be interested in designing paper art for us. An entire papercut collection has come out of this, paper clips where colors, light and shadow are in focus and compliment our light frames perfectly. They just arrived last month and they are super beautiful, especially in our Frameless Frames.
In marketing and sales, you rely on strong, long-term relationships with your retailers. Why do they choose you?
In Denmark we know where we want to be, the Danish market is not that big. You have to know about the potential and unique stores in order to see if they fit together with your brand. Uniqueness is the key here and you have to keep an eye open for relationships with new stores. Especially on international markets it is harder to get an overview of all the stores that would fit Studio About and vice versa. We work closely with our agents to form long-term and more so beautiful new relationships with new stores.

You have received 13 requests from new retailers at FAIRLING so far. Can you give us a little background information on one of these love stories?
Thanks to FAIRLING we have developed several great and long-term partnerships with retailers that continue to this day. We got a request from Besonders, a German store located in Hamburg. It’s a beautiful store that sells design, food and handmade products from small brands. It’s the perfect little store for finding a special gift and fits Studio About perfectly. Besonders seems to be a very nice shop and they work with a lot of nice brands and when Johanna, the owner of the store, wrote to us, we were thrilled and now we have formed a long-lasting partnership and Besonders successfully sells different variations of our Studio About products in their store.
This is the love story we are looking for at FAIRLING. Bringing unique brands and wonderful retailers together so they can form a long-lasting partnership that they found through FAIRLING.
Where should the journey go? What is the vision of Studio about?
We really want to show Germany our cool designs and this is what we are working on at the moment. Our long-term goal is to establish ourselves as a unique and sustainable brand all around the world and in Germany – since the market looks very promising there especially. We are looking for store owners with a sustainable mindset, an eye for good design, and those who are looking for great products that will put a smile on your customers’ faces.
Is there anything you would definitely advise other young, emerging brands to do?
Patience is probably the most important thing if you want to establish yourself as a brand in your own country and even more so internationally. It does take a lot of time and patience to find new potential stores for your brand and to form and to maintain a long-lasting partnership in retail. Don’t forget your unique selling point and try to stand out as a brand with your products.
The other thing is working hard. Like patience, working hard to find the fitting stores for your brand will eventually pay off. The process is long, you have to do your research, build your own brand identity and keep an eye open for new possibilities that will benefit your brand. You have to work hard for your goals and the ideals that your brand is standing for. And even if you have reached your preliminary goal, don’t stop there but set up new goals for yourself and your brand to thrive even more!
