how Kristina Dam Studio grew as a brand by connecting creativity and business expertise

We at FAIRLING have the mission to connect brands and retailers from all around the world and to make the world of wholesale a better and more sustainable place.

In our Brilliant Brands category on this blog we have asked unique brands from all around the world about their story and mission. We want to look behind the scenes of amazing brands and tell their story. Today, we have asked the inspiring Brand Kristina Dam Studio about their story.

Kristina Dam Studio was founded by Kristina Dam in 2012. The designs are graphic and architectural with a high level of details and excellent craftsmanship. And the furniture is mostly made from natural materials. They believe that mastering the monochromatic palette enable them to create timeless and enduring designs. Distinct and beautiful – simplicity with an attitude.

How did it all start? What’s the idea behind KRISTINA DAM STUDIO?

The initial design idea for the studio was to create industrial designs that had a more art-based approach. The idea of making art and interior design merge, both in furniture, accessories, art prints and illustrations. Today Kristina Dam Studio has developed into a design powerhouse of furniture and accessories. New designs are added to our collection every year, and we still introduce sculptural objects like vases and sculptures. It’s our DNA.

Who are the people behind the brand? Please tell us a bit about yourself.

I’m Kristina Dam, the founder of the Danish design brand Kristina Dam Studio. I graduated as a graphic designer from Royal Danish Academy – Architecture, Design, Conservation in 2007. After graduation, I worked as a graphic designer at Arkitema and later at 1508, a Danish strategic design company. I’m the mother of two and married to the musician Ketil Duckert. We live in Copenhagen.

I started Kristina Dam Studio on my own and for the first 3-4 years, it was more of a one-person show, but after some time, I hired a designer that has worked for Kristina Dam Studio for six years now, and is a big part of the brand today.

What was your favorite highlight Or happiest moment in the last months?

I’m looking back at 3daysofdesign. That was a great moment where we had the opportunity to set the scene for Kristina Dam Studio in the apartment of Kim Grenaa in the city center of Copenhagen – that was indeed a happy moment, thanks to my excellent team.

Besides that, what makes me happy is when I see the tremendous effort my team and I are pushing for the brand. For instance, when we shot the images for the new 2023 collection, I enjoyed seeing how playful and talented our stylist Kate Imogen works with our designs and tells our story through her styling at a cool location. That makes me proud!

Or that my designer drew a chair that came home from our production, and by first-hand, it was almost perfect – that is good work and collaboration between us and our production.

Do you remember the first retailer ever that stocked your products? How did that come about?

Yes, it was Stilleben in the city center Of Copenhagen. The most popular interior store in town at that moment and it still is. I went in with a few drawings under my arm, asking if they would be interested in selling my art prints. I hadn’t made an appointment, but I was lucky to catch one of the owners and left with a pretty big order and the question of when I could deliver – that was what started the journey for Kristina Dam Studio.

Which are your most successful and important marketing channels at the moment – and why?

Instagram and Pinterest. Through those channels, we can communicate directly with customers and people who admire the design. We find it very inspiring to see our designs in various settings.

Where is the journey to go? What is your vision of KRISTINA DAM STUDIO in the long run?

In the long run, I would love to stay with our core identity: Sculptural and minimalistic designs. I hope in the future we will be able to build brand stores or pop-up showrooms around the world and to keep on introducing sculptures and furniture.

To keep on selecting only the best materials, work with suitable suppliers and productions, and keep a good atmosphere and great teamwork among the whole team behind Kristina Dam Studio. A showroom and office in the city center would be an excellent first step into the future.

What tips could and would you give to other young and upcoming brands?

First, you must be true to your DNA and brand’s core. Don’t try to overcome too many materials and suppliers in the beginning. Stick to a few productions to start with, and be aware that a good brand identity/story and good production are the core to success.

And, of course, make sure to create designs that have something in mind.

Thank you, Kristina, for the lovely interview! We wish you all the best for you, your team and Kristina Dam Studio!
